Diary 2005

19th Dec. Pulling boys - along

Sunday saw a couple of mixed (ability ?) 8's going out, with 4 beautiful girls and 4 lads per boat. 3 short races were held, with Tina's cheating lot winning the 1st and the 3rd races, with Dave's playing it straight crew winning the all important 2nd race.

Neither crew ever got more than 1/2 a boat lead, so all very exciting, and a bit nail biting for the coxes due to a very low tide.

Elsewhere @ the weekend, pods of scullers went out along with various crew boats. A good end to another great year.

Merry Christmas everyone xxxxx

17th Dec. Feedback loop

The diary has had some feedback on the journalistic style deployed in this publication. The polite summary would be "tabloid in its content".

So readers, as this is an insult on your taste as well as our inability to write deep, meaningful and informative copy, we need some help (no surprise !!).

This diary is owned by you all, so feel free to write in with stories, jokes, photo's etc, and we may publish your work.

Auntie Theresa would like to start by asking us to remember the children at this very special time of year, and think about all those less fortunate than ourselves, especially the old and infirm who feel the cold any may not have enough money for heat and food.

If anyone has any pictures of children or old people, send them in and we will put them up on the site.

12th Dec. Sharing is good for you

As a club, we encourage green policies, and as such, support the concept of Car Sharing. This web site has details of various schemes that have been set up.

We are also happy to see that Annabelle and Nick have already started sharing Annabelle's car when travelling to the club for early Sunday morning outings - well done to both of you, setting a really good example. What is even more amazing is that they do not actually live that close to each other, and Nick does not even have a driving licence. I hope Annabelle knows this and is not being taken advantage of ???

A quick story from our Paramedic cox - called out to a patient early on Saturday morning. After racing through the early morning mist, lights flashing, vaulting up 2 stairs at a time to get to the patient, he introduced himself and asked the patient what appeared to be the problem today. The patient (a young lady) replied " All the boys think I am fat and ugly". This particular ailment was not covered in his intensive 20 week course, so he resorted to lying "of course you are not" etc etc. He hopes this ailment does not turn into an epidemic, as the ambulance service could be swamped.

He told his colleague about this particular patient hoping to get some advice from a more senior Paramedic. He was told he should not have lied, as the patient will now think she is cured, and when she next goes out and is told the awful truth, she will call out another ambulance and make a complaint.....

7th Dec. Morticia

and the rest of the Addams family. Which one is Lurch.....

7th Dec. attention seeker

She has to be involved......

The "diary" has received an e-mail from the bar mistress that states that she attended the last 3 pubs on the Waddle and interfered with Nick W's bow tie, I quote:

"Wyatt was very impressed with the speed at which a 'proper' (i.e. not a pre-tied clip on) bow tie could be done up: "That's marvellous! Where did you learn to do that?" "

Years of practice Nick, years of practice…

Practice doing what exactly, pulling ropes, pulling pints, pulling men ? - well the first 2 anyway. Very little evidence of her on Sunday morning cooking breakfast. Just coz we are not all young and German, she ignores us. Strangely, since she moved in (!!!!) with Stu, we see a lot more of him about the boathouse.
.

6th Dec. Poppy popped out a bit (version2)

We forgot this, Poppy's dress ripped, therefore displaying a bit more of her fantastic long legs to anyone who noticed....

The back of the dress was sawn up once, but as no industrial strength cotton was available, it soon broke free for a second time.

No photo's available, although Dave was spotted with a Camera, but when reminded about his title of "little sex pest" - he went back to his seat muttering.
.

6th Dec. what a ball

Well, last Saturday evening saw the 2005 Snow ball. It was organised (mostly) by Poppy - so a big thanks to her, and all the unsung heroes who helped out in various ways.

In chronological order:

Annabelle claims another victim - more later....

The Waddle tm - mostly boys, but a certain "Evil Lynne" (her description, not ours...) helped out on the first couple of venues. She reports that Cygnet El Capitain Nellie had to go onto 1/2 pints even by the second pub ! Meanwhile, Ladies were gathering in an exclusive little wine bar in Chiswick, drinking white wine and nibbling olives. Tania had a pint. Annelise informed us that rowing hands are bad for tights, having trashed several pairs on her less than smooth skin (on her hands, not her  legs).

On to the venue, lots of boys dressed up as Penguins, and lots of Ladies wearing dresses and make-up, all very strange. It quickly becomes obvious that the seating plan has been carefully crafted, and on further investigation (turn off now Mike) - it turns out a Spreadsheet had been used.... I also have it on good authority that a lot of "seat management" was requested, can I sit next to XXX please, and can I sit on a different table to YYY. Lets just hope this never gets made public. I am sure Poppy managed it all with great tact.

Some people were fashionably late, so their prawns were also fashionably eaten by people on the same table. That'll learn ya !!

The big conversation piece over dinner was the set of cards produced by a very brave Cygnet that had a profile of each and every Cygnet member. The specific item, entitled Number of BBLRC dalliances caused much debate, denial and utter shock in some cases. Two that spring to mind are Mike Collier, listed as 1 - WRONG (its 2 at least). and Nick Bates listed as 0 (but one Benrath) - also WRONG, more later.

Lots of dancing (to tunes of a bygone era to a lot of our members), including Dave with Petra and Mike C with Marj, tricky to say the least.

Jenny got incredibly drunk.

Mike C went home early - "feels a bit tired" said Theresa, "looks a bit pissed" replied Dave.

Overheard quote of the evening: Bill (made up name) - I think I want to go home now. Reply - so, you will be wanting the car keys then.

Most improved BBLRC member of the evening goes to Claire S in the much admired red dress. In true BBLRC style, she later spent a considerable time in the toilet, then asked Steph to "take me home" - in the "I am utterly wrecked and want to die" sense, not the Nick Rowett "I want to have mad monkey sex with you" sense. Tess, any comment ?

So finally, after much rumour and denial, it appears that Anabelle after being single for a few minutes, and sporting a very realistic tan (obtained during the Saturday morning outing apparently), is in some form of relationship with Nick "psycho" Bates. That, or is there another reason not known to us why his hand seemed to spend a lot of time on her bottom during the evening ??
.

27th Nov. 3 (or 4) non blondes - you decide

On the Sunday, after outings and various Cygnet committee meetings, the annual pub quiz was held - hosted by TAMMY. Food was also presented mostly by Poppy, but with numerous helping hands, too many to mention (or remember..).

Luckily, the French man was absent, so only a few of the answers were contested, including one about Palestine from a Mr Gourevitch, like he should have any special knowledge about the history of the region, I ask you. The quiz masters answer is final said Tammy - "you can not re-write history" shouted out a competitor. Some people, its not like its important.

Once all the answers were in and the points were added up, the winning team was announced as  The 3 Non Blondes, its members were Annabelle, Sarah R (sporting new straightened hair), Neil P and Nick B. Nick Wyatt who fancies himself as a brainiack, will be borrowing the club razor blade once the other Nick has finished with it.

A great day was had by all, apart from Tammy getting a bit distressed about a plate of chicken leftovers being put on the bar for people to eat. My god she exclaimed, its a bloody carcass, we are not animals you know. Yet another vegetarian who has slipped through the selection net.

Quote of the day from Poppy - "sorry, if you had money on you, I would give you one" - talking about a ticket to the ball obviously.
.

26th Nov. psychopath head race

Well, to do the full head course, in winter, in a single !! - just not right is it.

Our Lady entrant, Bryony (who ? - well, she is a bit like Keyser Soze, but much nicer...) raced, and amongst those she beat, was a very popular and indeed senior figure in the Cygnet committee structure (ie, above M Collier), our own Mr N Wylie. He seemed in good spirits about it when spoken to on Sunday morning on his way to the toilets with a razor blade.

Well done Bryony. Photos here. click next > a few times, lots to look at.

There were also 2 absolute stars from the "other side" who deserve very special praise indeed, for very different reasons.
Firstly, long suffering crew cox Marj completed the course and beat many other competitors. Her performance was obviously enhanced by using the BBLRC (or is it Theresa's ?) Empacher single. I do not actually remember seeing her out very often in a boat, well, in a seat facing backwards anyway, but as a lot of us know, she does a lot of land training, and has exceptionally well defined vocal cords amongst other sporting attributes. Well done. Photos here.
Secondly, another slightly shadowy figure, Julian (from Canada I think ? - joking......) who can often be found sneaking in a very early weekday morning outing, wearing that funny fleece Nepalese hat thing and showing off a bit too much chest for some of our ladies first thing, WON the S4 event. Congratulations, a great achievement. Photos here.
His training regime included previously sculling the course in a quad with a 100 kilo dead weight in the seat behind him in the 4s Head.

The 100 kilo dead weight in this particular race was a DNS - had a "bit of a cold" apparently.

Neil & Chris also raced, well done I suppose.....

26th Nov. hard men

Something tells me they knew someone was watching !!!!

Boys Boating

23rd Nov. For your favourite Cygnet ?

Maybe not......

looking good !!

There is actually some good stuff on sale as well.

23rd Nov. She is back in.....

Posted on the Cygnet website today, a list of the ball attendee's sorted by "sexiness", "intelligence", "fitness" and "rowing ability".
  • Mike Collier
  • Theresa Salter
  • Neil Pickford
  • Nick Wyatt + 1 (should that be Wyatt2)
  • Annabelle Hall
  • Annelise Sanders + 1
  • Caroline Glasspool
  • Carolyn Stubbs
  • Claire Sonnemann (do immigration know?)
  • Emma Bryce + 5
  • Dave Gledhill (already reported to Microsoft as a bug)
  • Ali Elliot
  • Dave French + 1
  • etc...

Now of course, the source data is not complete, as it does not include such obvious candidates as Tammy & Esme (both unfortunately unavailable for the ball) or indeed a good number of the new novices who are, to quote an off the record conversation in the "boys locker room" (gay !) - hot. However, data issues aside, after a considerable period of absence from the infamous list of the most bla bla bla BBLRC ladies, it appears Annabelle is back in at the unofficial number 2 spot.

However, she should not be complacent as there are others snapping at her heels, and it is especially pleasing to see some of the newer, and indeed some of the older members starting to make an impact as well, lets hope the ball proves a good hunting ground for them.

22nd Nov. No lycra required

On Sunday, the very new novices, being without their usual cox to herd them around, decided on a bit of self management. So, Jemma took charge and organised a bunch of them to turn up at the club at the usual outing time. So far so good.
Then, in traditional BBLRC style, they headed off to the Old Ship for Sunday lunch....

The Cygnet fashion correspondent would have been proud, one sported a very nice Shrug, and indeed, plans are now afoot to design a fleece BBLRC shrug for those chilly early morning outings.
As some of the boys may be reading this, a picture of a Shrug.

Note to Mike C, it is acceptable to wear a T shirt under a shrug, but not under a short sleeved shirt - believe Theresa....

On a serious note, 2 of them admitted to being accountants (we really do need to design an application process that weeds out such people), and one admitted to designing and fitting prosthetic limbs, maybe she should become a VP in Cygnet, a target rich environment ?

And finally, in true BBLRC style, as they were leaving, a nice young man asked if he could have the table. Of course, no problem, and one of them even stayed behind to make sure he settled in o/k. Just finishing my wine she said limply....

19th Nov. Hairy ladies in the showers ?

It has been reported that the clubs resident sex pest, whilst on his post outing rummage in the ladies changing rooms, discovered a lot of water in the shower cubicle. So, thinking this was just the excuse he needed, he went into the showers and unblocked the waste pipe by removing a massive clump of soapy hair.

To prevent men entering the showers, follow these simple guidelines:

When water stops going down the waste pipe, take the plastic top off, remove all the hair, put the top back on again.

This will prevent seedy little men getting on their hands and knees in your showers when you are not looking.

19th Nov. Rhiannon is right, we are in the wrong club....

After outings on Saturday, Rhiannon was boasting about how many "boyfriends" she has had (over 8 she claims, and she is only 23 - so that's more than one a year since she was "allowed" to have relationships sex) and that Bell Ringing clubs have been a fertile hunting ground for her.

So, Google was fired up, and her name popped up on this web site. It is strangely addictive, some of the boys may like to have a look at this years secretary..., although by contrast, the Chairman actually looks like, well, a Chairman.

17th Nov. Essential reading before the Snowball, you have been warned...

Say what you mean, and mean what you say ??

15th Nov. I am sure none of our ladies would do such a thing ??

No wonder Tebbers "current" man sold his quickly.......

Note from a "male member" - the car above is a Porsche Boxter. Only wannabee's (is that apostrophe correct ?) buy the Boxter, real achievers buy 911's. If you can not afford the right one, go without, you are fooling no one apart from Annabelle.

15th Nov. Small things bother..........

Sent into the diary by someone who should be working.

Dave, Dave, Dave…

The new website is, as I've said, fantastic, however the frequent apostrophe misuse is causing me great pain.

Attached is a humourous (that should be humorous I think - ed ???) cartoon to assist with this problem.

No need to thank me - I'm just glad to be of help!

Lots of love,

The Grammar Guru x

P.S: If you're going to blog lies and scandal about me never having made you tea, then you're going to have to be prepared for revenge, natch! ;o) (natch ? - explain...)

13th Nov. 2 Heads, Four Play, Stroke Me Gently & Rocky

All in one weekend.

Saturday saw 3 BBLRC crews heading out, the Elite coxless 4 in Rocky, (elite without a cox ??? - ed.) followed by two WS3+ coxed 4's in SMGII and Four Play.

Elite

Senior 3 + Senior 3 +
Sarah T
Annabelle
Steph
Ali
Caroline
Tania
Lou
Poppy
Maria

Dave
Laura
Caroline
Jenny
Lucy

All crews reported being very happy with their races and times. There was even a "lady" in a Cygnet boat, none other than ex Captain and web mistress, Es. So impressed that a lady of such high calibre would climb into their boat with them, these young and very inexperienced oarsmen presented her with a bunch of flowers for her efforts, along with a packet of cigars ? At the time of writing, none of them have yet managed to sleep with her.

Back on dry land, the catering effort was in full swing with a great number of very willing helpers, so thanks to everyone who pitched in. There were some great muffins and cookies, allegedly, home produced. There were also some truly awful muffins, we are investigating where they came from.

Theresa (ex captain and long suffering girlfriend of the Cygnet web master) received a mysterious phone call asking her to urgently go next door and look in the basement of Emanuel boathouse for a couple of boxes with timers on and flashing LED's and report back. Err, o/k, seems odd, better ask a cox for advice. Dave was found and sent in to look for these boxes, with Theresa hovering outside, cowering behind the strong wooden doors.

Two boxes were discovered (part of the radio net apparently), and once the plug was put back in on the "dead one" - all was o/k.

On Sunday, the Vets 4s Head took place, with a couple of BBLRC ladies in composite crews competing.

Ali's crew (Vet C 4+) won their category, as did Jackie Darlings Vet C quad - first 2 wins of the "new" season.

Quote of the day by Dave on an assertion that he is a bit tough on new novices - "no, that is not true, we both play different roles, Tina plays hard cox and I play soft cox".

Bar Mistress got up early, came down the boathouse and cooked breakfast for the 18 German men who were staying in the Shed. She has never even made me a single cup of tea in all the time I have known her - funny that.

Annabellism's (soon to be a regular feature).

1) She did not realise that MAA have perfectly usable loo's, often better to wait a minute or so...
2) Asked Dave to have a look at her car, as it would not idle - no oil in the engine was discovered as the fault. Put oil in, car now runs as VW intended.

10th Nov. Go on - go home, see if we care......

54,000 of em, and all living in West London it seems.

We teach them to row, we call them our friends, we show them how to put there seats on the right way round, we even let them run help run our club. How do they repay us, by leaving just because there is low unemployment and job prospects "back home".

Luckily, the Aussie government is not yet running such a campaign, so I am sure we can still fill our ranks with the slightly more refined antipodeans, providing they can get visa's of course.

8th Nov. Why does my bum hurt on this seat

As with many questions asked by BBLRC ladies, there is no easy, or indeed right answer, however, putting the actual seat on the right way round may help a bit.

This handy picture can be used for future reference. Print out and keep in the boat at all times. The arrow shows the direction of front stops.

In the Southern Hemisphere, apparently, water goes down the plug hole the other way around, the so called Coriolis effect, maybe there is a connection, who knows.

8th Nov. Animals in the bar

It appears that we now have 2 Giraffe's in the bar, although the latest one is genetically modified and comes with Ambilight technology as well as a "chiller" facility, whatever that means.

Allegedly, the new "Husky Lovetube" or whatever it is called, can dispense cocktails as well as beer, or so Mike is trying to convince the Bar Mistress. Lets see shall we.

Initial User Acceptance Testing has taken place at the weekend, and both Giraffe's have been accepted into service and will be flood tested this weekend after the 4's Head.

4th Nov. Poppy is the best user of e-mail - official ??

Last night Poppy won a really big National Marketing Award at posh-doo on Park Lane. The award was for 'Best use of e-mail' and it was against all the huge advertising and marketing agencies, so it was good for little old Cancer Research (who employ Poppy) to win.

Next year, BBLRC will be entering the "best use of a spreadsheet" category. Cygnet, come on, rise to the challenge, what category will you chose ?

3rd Nov. Spot the difference.

Picture A
Random Wednesday afternoon in Nov.

Picture B
Monday erg night - 2 weeks before 4's Head

Have you spotted any difference - no, well to be honest, it is hard to see in these small photo's, but in picture B, the 2 erg's on the left have a bit of sweat around them, as Dave (cox) and Katy (lovely new person, not racing in the 4's Head) have just done a 5K erg test as requested.....

31st Oct. Lessons from Annabelle ?

Received today via e-mail...

Hi Dave

Well we had all good intentions on Sunday but totally missed the time change and in effect turned up an hour early(unaware of course) and wondered where everyone was. We waited around and eventually thought that we must have missed an email from you at some stage. Went to play golf instead – only to be told by friends that our times where wrong! A little embarrassing but makes for a smile and a story at least.

Hope to see you this Sunday though. Very keen indeed.

Cynthia (and on behalf of Bridget too)

went to play golf !! - need to sift these people out sooner.

31st Oct. Old Boiler

The Burco hot water boiler, an integral part of the infamous catering set up, and arguably the most used piece of kit in the BBLRC inventory, stopped functioning at the Pairs Head. We must have a new one, said a senior BBLRC official (bit of a pattern forming ?).

They even conned the Boathouse Chairman, Mr Le Fleur, into authorising the money for a new one.

The maintenance fairy (who ?) visited and replaced the faulty connection and boiling can re-commence forthwith.

31st Oct. User error ???

When taking the launch out, follow 2 simple rules:

1) ask a man for instructions first
2) if no man available, do not go afloat

launches have a thing called a "kill switch" - make sure it is connected, otherwise it does what it says on the can - it kills the engine, leaving the crew red faced and having to paddle back to shore.

O/K - so Ali diagnosed the "fault", but that's just detail.

Also, a senior BBLRC official was heard to say in an exasperated voice - we just have to get a new engine for this thing.

We have taken over..........

There are others in charge of this site now, beware !

If you do something, see something or hear something, let us know, and we will tell everyone else.

Pairs Head

Run by BBLRC, went without a hitch, even though Big Mike had a menial job to do, involving a megaphone. We suspect, as always, Marj did it for him.

For a Ladee, the sky is the limit!!

Best example is ex-Barnes Bridge Ladee Lorna Norris. Having started as a complete Novice at BBLRC in 2000, Lorna won her Novice Pot at St. Neot’s in 2001, coxed by our very own Davina (and I’m sure he’ll tell you all about it if you ask him

Just 4 years on, she has just won Bronze in the lightweight quad at the World Championships in Gifu , Japan on Sunday. What an achievement – well done!! For all those who wonder whether or not they should skip that dreaded erg – think again.

out with the old...

It's that time of year again, the election of the captaincy. After a very successful (and let's face it quite time consuming year) the captains decided to stand down.

A relatively small club that has taken great strides over the last year in terms of training, fitness, actively holding events to include Cygnet, make money, have fun etc  This has paid off.  BBLRC is a great place to be. In the departing speech Tammy reminded us of some great achievements. Here the highlights:

  • The club has the largest membership ever and the list of people awaiting the next Novice weekend is ever growing
  • Wins - an impressive list: 2 wins at Novice; 2 at S4; 6 at S3 (one being at the Met); 2 at S2 (one being at Peterborough) and 8 in the Vet category (two gold medals at the FISA World Masters Regatta in Hamburg and 1 gold medal at the National Vet Champs). That makes a total of a total of 73 pots were won this year. Notably those 73 pots have been won by a variety of our members proving that there is quite a lot of rowing success in the club as a whole rather than with just one or two set crews.  Club regatta pots and fun races have obviously not been included in this figure!
  • New equipment - new 8 'Gledders' (just in time for the 8's Head training) bringing the total of 8's up to 3; 8 brand new vortex smoothies; a Fillipi 2-/2+ 'Teen Spirit'; a brand new camcorder to help with individual coaching
  • Fitness, Training & Coaching - it's fair to say that the Ladeez are fitter then ever. With the completion of the Shed early in the season, the training and fitness levels have risen and have directly contributed in our success on the water. Greg's Personal Fitness coaching (built specifically around rowing) was a great success and will continue the same way for the 05/06 winter season. Cygnet/BBLRC train together more than ever before. We participate in external events together such as Birmingham Indoor Erg Championships, Rowers Revenge Triathlon in Marlow, Nike runs, club training for these events etc. A great thank you to Simona Blackburn, Steve Keating, Nick Rowett and Ali Elliot for the coaching they have done for us this year.
  • Watertraining - BBLRC have managed weekend outings, which at times have seen 85 seats filled in just one weekend.  That takes quite some organisation and both Caroline and Elizabeth should be thanked for their ability to do these plans regularly, quickly and so well.
  • Lots of fun and events: Shed Opening Party (attended by Gillian Lindsay, Olympic Silver Medalist); BBLRC Ball (attended by Greg Searle, Olympic Gold Medallist); Valentines Party; Novice Welcome BBQ; Run’s, DVD nights, cinema trips; 5k and 10k races for cancer research and for errrr ‘fun’; Boathouse Christmas Lunch; Rowers Revenge Triathlon in Marlow; BBLRC pub quiz; all the stuff we did with Cygnet: Sculling camps; Cygnet’s End of Season Dinner, BBLRC-Cygnet football match (2-2); After training dinners; club regatta with Cygnet and Benrath and not to forget the endless drinking, chatting and gossiping in the bar.
  • Pair's Head - this event is run by BBLRC and it grows year on year.  The last event was attended by Gillian Lindsay (silver Olympist) who presented awards and officially opened the Shed for us.  Those who run this event will include Ali, Theresa, Elizabeth, Dave, Sarah R and Katherine P.
  • Women's Henley Regatta - BBLRC entered a 4+ with Helen, Jo, Bea and Annabelle. It started off with a squad of 10 competing for seats. Tina took the lead on coxing this crew, organising coaching, water training, land training, seat racing in May and much much more besides.  The crew won in the Met at S3 4+ level prior to Henley.  Their opposition for the first race at Henley was a crew they’d beaten at the Met already – they scratched at Henley, giving our ladies a bye.  Unfortunately our girls were just pipped to the post in their second heat against the crew who came 2nd overall.  A really great achievement for those involved and for BBLRC to be represented so well at Womens’ Henley.

  • On the horizon - plans to refurbish the ladies’ changing rooms, purchase new lockers, have a really good clear out and upgrade the sink area as well as plans to plans to seek some sports funding.

(full speech available in the member's section)

A big thank you to Tammy, Tina, Elizabeth and Caroline for doing a sterling job.

and in with the new...

Congratulations to the newly elected Captaincy

  •     Emma Bryce - Captain

  •     Stephanie Jackson - Deputy Captain

and again, congratulations are in order

To Tania, Annabelle, Bea and Steph for their qualifying win at S3 4+ at St. Neots. Same goes for Theresa and Chris who gave a sterling performance in the mixed double.

To Elizabeth, Lous, Emma and Tammy for their qualifying win at S4 4+ in Maidenhead, Tammy's home turf..

To Helen, Annabelle, Bea and Steph for their win at S2 4+ in Maidenhead, but more impressively at Peterborough Summer regatta.

and finally to Tebbers, Annabelle, Claire and Steph for their qualifying win in S3 4+ at Oxford Town regatta.

Above all though congratulations to Tina who coxed all of those races. (Tall order for Davina to follow next season ...)

Congratulations

To Tania, Steph, Claire, Mary and Dave (cox) to their hardly fought and well-deserved qualifying win at S3 4+ at Molesey last weekend. Somehow someone forgot to take the ARA cards along never mind a camera - surely no indication that they didn't expect to win?? So Dave missed out on his obligatory bath in the river - fear not - we'll make sure you get it at St. Neot's next weekend!!!

BBLRC/Cygnet Sports day on Sunday - don't miss it!!

As Poppy and Dave F, our respective Social Secs and proud organisers of the event point out:

"Oh yes.  Rowing requires all sorts of muscle groups, so how better to develop them than running with an egg in a spoon, over obstacles, attached to a crewmate, in a sack?"

So plenty to look forward to this Sunday 17th afternoon. The fun starts at 12noon at the boathouse, with elite competitive nonsense taking place on the Duke's Meadow football pitch.  It's also hoped that there will be some boat-namings either at the start or end of proceedings, followed by the obligatory barbecue at the boathouse from 4pm.

There will be a small charge for all this fun on the day. Please let them know if you'd like to take part so that they have some idea of numbers (and can sort out the complicated repechage system for the heats of the S2 "carry your cox" event).

The gauntlet has been thrown...

"To provide further incentive to compete I am willing to make a wager that no boy will get within 5 minutes of me and no girl will get within 15 minutes (and I might stretch that to 25 minutes for Mike." [Nick Wyatt, Cygnet]

So what is this all about? The Rower's Revenge triathlon is exactly what it says on the tin - a triathlon for rowers, ie the swimming has been replaced by an erg:

  •     4k ergo

  •     25k bike ride

  •     7.5k run

You can either do it all on your own (let's face it - not an attractive prospect for some of us) or - and that's quite fun - you can do it as a team!!!! You enter as 2 or 3 and do one bit each - preferably working to each others strengths!! We all try and train together which turns the ordeal into something akin to fun... Interested? Tempted? Unsure? Have a look at their website if you want more info. Once you've decided let us know !!

From the changing rooms....

Apparently there was plenty of action to be seen between Cygnet/BB Novices (doing their bit for interclub relations and making their captains proud)

... one BB lady going back to Tideway Scullers ....  1 young Cygnet doing his bit to further the good relations between Benrath and Cygnet...and finally, scuffling was heard behind the Emmanuel wall and a couple of bodies writhing around in the mud were spotted - they know who they are! [The rest of us will have to keep guessing for the time being - ed.]

and from the horses mouth...

"As for tit bits...... BBLRC ladies took over the dance floor in the infernos tent I by this point was sobering up so other bits before were a little hazy...... I'm sure someone will have something to say about my recycling efforts!"

"Saturday there was lots of tea and cakes and race fixing...... with only Dave not winning anything!"

Defeat off the water...

It appears that the first "Bake-off" competition was won by Steve Keating for his 'deliciously moist muffins, creatively fusing rhubarb and white chocolate'. (Still waiting to see the photographic evidence!).  And we thought that Tammy's muffins were unbeatable. Really Ladeez, a bit more effort next time, pleeease!!

17th-19th June Henley Women’s Regatta

Well done to Helen, Bea, Jo and Annabelle. After getting through the first round, they were beaten by the finalist Thames A by just 2/3 of a length!!!! For more details on the competition etc. have a look at the HWR website.

Not only the 'young' ones ....

Our very own Jackie Darling won the a gold medal at the National Vets at Nottingham in a composite Women's Vet D4+ crew.  Pauline Rayner (TRC), Jackie Darling (BBLRC), Karon Phillips (Maidenhead), Jacqui Parry (Burway) & cox Edmund Bradbury (TRC) beat the Birmingham/Upton composite by 6 secs over 1000m. Well done !!!

Won - easily ...BBLRC win S3 at the Met

Go the bridge - if there ever was any doubt about Barnes Bridge Ladies (Helen, Bea, Jo and Annabelle and Tina (cox) being able to compete with the crème de la crème have a look at this video as the Henley comfortably row to victory at the Met.

Come and cheer them on!!

The Henley girls are entering the Met at Dorney Lake this Sat. If you are free on Sat - why not go and cheer them on. They are racing in

Race 67 @ 15:00

Lane 1 National University of Ireland, Galway (A)

Lane 2 Clare College BC

Lane 3 Barnes Bridge Ladies RC

Lane 4 Bridgnorth RC

Lane 5 Broxbourne RC

There are 3 heats (17 crews) and the first 2 from each heat go into the final (no repecharges) at 19.25. Further info can be found under www.metregatta.org.

The sweet sound of success...

What is it about the Richmond course? It just as well gives you success as defeat...That final bend is tricky and challenges even the more experienced of coxes. Having won their first heat comfortably, the S4 Eight proceeded to win the next one by half a length when the race was declared nil and void as we crossed over a white buoy. In pouring rain we did it yet again and lost by a quarter of length - nothing really.

All the more pleased we are for Tina to then go on and cox the Novice 4+ to victory and a well deserved Novic pot!!! Congratulations to Tania, Claire, Bea and Caroline - it was long overdue !!!!

The S3 4+ proved that they have an excellent start but there is some improvement to be had in taht bit that comes after the stride...which rest assured the four are working on !! The Novice 8+ and S4+ lost their heats to Staines and Twickenham respectively who then went on to win the finals. Full results can be found here.

BBQ on Sunday 22nd May

A quick reminder that there'll be a BBQ at the club after outings this coming Sunday, 22nd May (from midday onwards). Weather permitting, it'll be a chance to enjoy the sunshine, the garden and, most importantly, to welcome all our new members to the club. Feel free to bring friends and family along - the more the merrier. Please let Poppy know by Friday if you're planning on coming so that she can get a rough idea of numbers for food.Hope to see many of you there - should be great fun !!!

A great start to the regatta season

All the hard training during those harsh winter months (not to mention the grueling 6am midweek outings) seem to have paid off as the S38+ rowed to victory ay Chiswick regatta. The Ali Baba crew - Tina, Helen, Bea, Ruth, Tammy, Poppy, Huma, Tebbers and Steph - won their straight final of S3 8+ against Putney Town and Royal University Medical Students.

Congratulations also go to Bea and Helen for winning a 'pointless' pot against MAABC, winning by 3 lengths at Borne Regatta a week later.

About Captains and Launches….

Both the BBLRC and Cygnet captain contributed to delectation and amusement of the membership as both managed to push their respective launches off hard from the shore before noticing that they forgot to take the petrol tank with them. Thankfully both are experienced rowers and paddled back to the shore…ts ts ts…

Sponsor the bridge!!

On Wednesday 4th of May some of the Ladies (Caroline, Poppy, Bea, Tania, Tammy, Lucy, Elizabeth, T,  Sarah R, Steph, Petra and Rachel) are running the Cancer Research 5K around Battersea Park. They would really appreciate if you could visit their webpage and sponsor them here.

Do you read this diary?

I do wonder at times as I haven't had a single reply to my plea for feedback!! Go on, tell me what you think!!!!

We want YOU!!!

To give us some feedback on our website as I’m planning to give the website a bit of a makeover. Rather then working in splendid isolation, I’d rather find out what YOU want from your club website.  So, this is an appeal and YOUR opportunity to let me know to share your thoughts/wishes/grievances, etc. with your club website.

How? Send me an * email and tell me

· What are the three things you like most about our current website?

· What are the things we could improve?

· What should we do more/less of?

· What else should we have on our website (be as creative as you like)

· Name a website YOU find particularly good (doesn’t have to be a rowing website) be it with regards to content, structure, style, layout etc.

I can’t promise that every single suggestion will be turned reality but it’s the one chance you have (at least for the moment) to have your say—so go on and email me!!!

 Afraid of bowsteering? No need…

Emma B is the living proof that you can bowsteer with 3 hours sleep and definitely over the legal alcohol limit. In fairness, it was the Vic Reeves, the tide high and the Imperial College boys weren’t hogging the river. After a steering somewhat anxiously through Barnes and Chiswick Bridge, a blissful silence descended from the bow and you could only hear the beautiful sound of a boat gliding along the water…

… only worrying thing, Emma went home for a little sleep and when she woke up needed to check with Robin to find out whether she’d it to the outing or not...

The golden oldies ….

Well, there weren’t all that many oldies in the mixed vets head crew as the Germans (truly vets) helpfully pointed out. You wouldn’t imagine the preparation it takes to get a mixed crew on the water—partly because there are very few ladies with size 12 shoes (we won’t mention the exceptions here … Theresa). As our captain quite rightly pointed out, rowing in such shoes would be like rowing the 8’s head feet out—let’s face it—not something you’d voluntarily choose to do (but something Simon could quite easily dream up as a “useful” exercise….). Then there was of course the obligatory motivational speech—given so aptly by the Cygnet captain (no print-outs in sight this time). There was some minor confusion over the actual course as unfortunately Anna (new to the tideway) had forgotten her map in the boathouse and mistook Barnes Bridge for Hammersmith Bridge (I wonder though why stern pair did not help help her her out as she only found out at Hammersmith bridge that she'd got it slightly wrong....

A great thank you....

to Esme for all the hard work as webmistress (Little did I know how much coding was involved when I "volunteered"... but Esme kindly promised me to provide me with my own private 24hrs helpline).

Can't promise that I can match the dry English humour - we all know that Germans are not known for that particular quality - but I promise to introduce you to the European variety - in the spirit of ever closer integration...

Frenzied attacks...

It's the mini Head this weekend and of course the Ladies AGM on Sunday. If you were ever worried that the boys don't take us seriously as athletes...[An un-named Cygnet writes...]

"Please do be aware, whilst enjoyment is paramount, a frenzied machete attack will follow if the women's crew is anywhere near us. I for one sustained a 20 minute the other day, unfortunately I no evidence to substantiate this fact."

"As Tammy's mentioned a couple of time in the 'Bitz', a number of us have decided to run Cancer Research UK's 5km Race for Life this year.

For those of you who've not heard of it, Race for Life, is the UK’s biggest women only fundraising event with 162 venues right across the country. Women of all ages and all levels of fitness take part (you can walk, jog or run), and all the money raised will help fund the life-saving research of Cancer Research UK - the world’s leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research.

We've decided to enter the Battersea Park event which takes place at 7:30pm on Wednesday 4th May. Tammy, Caroline, Lucy, Elizabeth, Steph, Bea and myself have all entered already so please join us and enter online now!
