Become a member and
bake cakes.....
And row as well of
course !! (you can not row ? - go to the bottom of the page....)
Becoming a member of BBLRC is not
just about handing over some money in return for access to a fine fleet of
boats, a fully equipped training shed, warm & comfortable club facilities and free
tea and coffee, its more a lifestyle choice....
The club is run entirely by its
members, there are no paid staff in our employ. The changing rooms are cleaned
(occasionally) by members, the grass is cut by members, the famous BBLRC
catering operation is manned by members and so on. Making cakes and sandwiches
to sell at the major races that happen on our stretch of the Thames is almost as
important as your erg score, well maybe not quite, but you get our drift.
We live in the Civil Service
Boathouse. The Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC) fund the basic running of the
boathouse, such as rent and rates, as well as some maintenance. The club, along
with Cygnet (the
pretty (awful..) boys who live with us) fund the day to day running costs such
as gas, electric etc etc.
You do not have to be a Civil
Servant to join, but if you are, your subscriptions are reduced if you are also
a member of the CSSC.
So, how much does it cost ?

NEVER ROWED BEFORE- read on.
A large number of the active
membership actually joined the club having never rowed before, including a
couple who went on to become Club Captains.
To embark on the sessions below, it is important to know that you will need to
be able to swim 100metres (self certified), be of average
fitness/strength to start with (as you will have to carry boats around, as
well as having to row for up to 60 minutes in a session, with breaks) and have
reasonable co-ordination skills. If you are in any doubt, please
just contact us and we can have a chat and hopefully put your mind at rest. Age
is not usually a barrier, although you must be at least 18 or over to start.
We have just introduced a new and
simple charging structure for people who are interested in rowing, but want to
try before they buy so to speak.
a) 3 x 1 hour (approx) land
based sessions free. This will include both intro to the club, the sport of
rowing, ergo (rowing machine) tuition and tank (land based water rowing)
tuition.
b) 8 x 1 hour (approx) sessions
for an upfront, non refundable fee of £40. The 8 sessions can be taken at any
time in a 12 week period. No refund for drop outs / lessons not taken unless
extenuating circumstances apply.
c) Once 8 sessions have been
taken, you will be invited to either join the club*, go away hopefully happy
having had some fun, or very exceptionally, be allowed to "buy" a 2nd course
of 8 x 1 hour sessions. You can not purchase a 3rd course of 8 x 1 hour
lessons, ie, there is not a “pay as you row” option.
d) If you join, the £40 (or £80)
will be deducted from the first years subs. Subs will run from date of
membership application, not start date of “learn to row” sessions.
*
we reserve the right to refuse club
membership for any reason we feel appropriate. Occasionally, some people are
just not fit enough or have enough co-ordination to become rowers. We will have
an open and honest dialogue with anyone who falls into this category. |
