Captain’s update 14/08

Dear all

Once again I’m asking for help and volunteers….however on this occasion there is a real incentive.

This year is an important one in investing in new talent. We need to ensure we can continue to build a successful and vibrant club.

To that end we have revamped our learn to row course. On the weekend we are launching our ‘Get fit and row’ course with an Open Day on Sunday (19th August).

The course has had a phenomenal response on our website, particularly since the success of the Olympic Rowers.

As part of the Olympic goal to Inspire a generation, this coming weekend is being promoted as ‘Join in’  weekend, so people can find out about all different sports. We advertised our pre-course Open Day on the ‘Join in’ site. We have now been selected by the ‘Join in’ team to be visited by their Battle Bus, which is touring the country with sporting celebrities on board!

What will happen on the Open Day?

It will run from 12pm – 5.30pm. We’ll be running hourly sessions, starting on the hour with introduction from the me with a tour of club facilities, followed by:

– Rowing machine (ergo) demonstration with audience participation
– Indoor rowing tank with audience participation
– Informal questions and answers with club members

So, we need volunteers on the weekend to:

– help with show arounds / erg / tank
– help with refreshments
– be around to be generally enthusiastic about all things rowing
– meet some celebrities!

It doesn’t end there….

We also need volunteers to help with the running the course. The course is over six weeks, so there are 18 sessions to cover. If everybody volunteered for one session we would have more than enough help.

Sessions are:

Monday eve (cross training) – take a group for a run or do a short circuit
Wednesday eve (ergs/tank) – help out in the shed, offer tips on good erg technique
Saturday mornning (ergs/OTW) – coxes always welcome

If you’re happy to help please let me know and I will start a rota – for both the Open Day and the course.
