Captain’s update 14/08

Dear all

Once again I’m asking for help and volunteers….however on this occasion there is a real incentive.

This year is an important one in investing in new talent. We need to ensure we can continue to build a successful and vibrant club.

To that end we have revamped our learn to row course. On the weekend we are launching our ‘Get fit and row’ course with an Open Day on Sunday (19th August).

The course has had a phenomenal response on our website, particularly since the success of the Olympic Rowers.

As part of the Olympic goal to Inspire a generation, this coming weekend is being promoted as ‘Join in’  weekend, so people can find out about all different sports. We advertised our pre-course Open Day on the ‘Join in’ site. We have now been selected by the ‘Join in’ team to be visited by their Battle Bus, which is touring the country with sporting celebrities on board!

What will happen on the Open Day?

It will run from 12pm – 5.30pm. We’ll be running hourly sessions, starting on the hour with introduction from the me with a tour of club facilities, followed by:

– Rowing machine (ergo) demonstration with audience participation
– Indoor rowing tank with audience participation
– Informal questions and answers with club members

So, we need volunteers on the weekend to:

– help with show arounds / erg / tank
– help with refreshments
– be around to be generally enthusiastic about all things rowing
– meet some celebrities!

It doesn’t end there….

We also need volunteers to help with the running the course. The course is over six weeks, so there are 18 sessions to cover. If everybody volunteered for one session we would have more than enough help.

Sessions are:

Monday eve (cross training) – take a group for a run or do a short circuit
Wednesday eve (ergs/tank) – help out in the shed, offer tips on good erg technique
Saturday mornning (ergs/OTW) – coxes always welcome

If you’re happy to help please let me know and I will start a rota – for both the Open Day and the course.

Captain’s update 01/08

Hi all

I hope everyone had the opportunity to watch the Women’s Pair win gold today a Dorney, what a great day for Women’s Rowing!

We’ve had a flurry of enquiries from existing and novices about joining via the website, so I think the Olympics will definitely spark some attention for rowing which is great news.

Just a quick one from me today. This year has flown by and on 13 August it will be time to vote in the Presidents and Captains for 2012/13. The more volunteers we have the easier the job will be to continue to run a successful club.

The following roles are open for anyone interested to put themselves forward. I will post the nominations on the board in the club this week:

Captain
Novice Captain
Vice Captain
Deputy Captain

If you would like to put yourself forward please speak with myself or one of the existing committee members. For more details about Committee duties, please see the website https://www.bblrc.co.uk//runningtheclub/committee/

Finally – date for your diary – the Christmas Dinner has been booked! Keep Saturday 15th December free for a great BBL night.

To keep up to date on up coming events, please see our event calendar https://www.bblrc.co.uk//calendar/

Enjoy the Olympics and hopefully see you soon.

Captain’s update 23/07

Hi all

The last few weeks have been hectic with non rowing activities, such as the Barnes Fair and the Summer ‘Farewell Jo’ BBQ.

Despite being a pretty rotten day we made £300 in the rowing machine competition and cake selling. Thank you to all involved in making it such a success. Details of the winners and photo of the super stall can be seen on the website: https://www.bblrc.co.uk//2012/07/barnes-fairs-erg-challenge-winners-announced/

On Friday we had a BBQ at the Captain’s place in Putney. We presented the Henley crews with engraved momentos and we sadly had to say goodbye to Jo. We presented Jo with a photo of Barnes Bridge (and a Wiggle voucher, which came a bit later)  from all the generous donations. I think Jo will miss us a little and she will most definitely be missed by all at the club. Despite the weather report, we were saved from the rain, with only a few drops spilled. A late night and the need for many recycling bags, suggests a good time was had by all. Details of the night, with photos of Jo’s presentation, https://www.bblrc.co.uk//2012/07/bblrc-summer-bbq/
