An evening with John Inverdale

John Inverdale has recently joined the club as our Patron. To welcome him to the club we had an evening of rowing, racing, BBQ and boat naming (and a few bubbles).

Two mixed eights from our Intermediate and Novice rowers and John had a technical paddle to Putney Town, followed by two races back to the club. John’s opponent  boat won in the first race, and following some interesting start manoeuvres, went on to a close win in the second finishing at the Boat House flag pole.

Once everyone had time to enjoy the BBQ, we proceeded to name the launches and also toast good luck to the crew racing at Henley Women’s.

Having recently taken ownership of our second launch, funded by Sport England and the National Lottery to support our Get fit and rowers, we felt it fitting to give them names.

John was delighted to be involved in the naming ceremony of Barney and Bridget, the names were suggested, and then revealed, by 2013 Henley Eight crew member Sharon Leow. We were also delighted to discover that previous long term Captain G E Barnes, who kept the club going over the wars, was commonly called Barney by the club members.

It was a great team effort – thanks to all involved.

Helena took some great pics…
